In 2023, we built incredible power together and we\u2019re beginning 2024 with the momentum, focus, and power we need to begin building a child care system that truly works for every family. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In our first year as a united network, we\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2705 Spent intentional time building a strong foundation<\/a> together to build power for transformational wins on child care<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2705 Developed a key set of shared values and policy principles<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2705 Hired an amazing Network staff team<\/a> dedicated to supporting states and building power as a movement<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2705 Hosted the Asamblea de Esfuerzos Comunitarios<\/a>, convening over 100 impacted families, providers, and organizers in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2705 Developed key partnerships with child care champions and identified where we need to shift power<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2705 Worked with a wide group of partners to create a strong, bold plan to win the transformative changes we seek!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have a lot of work to do in 2024 to build a pro-child care Congress.<\/strong> As we send this, House Republicans continue to obstruct $16 billion in emergency funding for child care, despite the devastating impact on kids, families, and providers across the country. If they won\u2019t act now, then when? It\u2019s time for representation that is aligned with our values and listens to our needs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meet our new Organizing Director for Network Capacity, Mercedes Phelan!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Mercedes Phelan (she\/her) <\/strong>is a radical Black feminist who is fighting for Liberation, with a focus on breaking the school- to-prison pipeline. Before working in politics and organizing she was a childcare teacher in her hometown of Rochester, New York. She came into organizing in 2017 as an Organizer at Citizen Action for New York. After founding Citizen Action\u2019s first Rochester Chapter in 2018, the chapter went on to win its first campaign, the removal of SRO\u2019s (School Resource Officers) from the Rochester City School District.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>

Mercedes was also a part of campaigns such as the Safe and Supportive Schools Act, the Campaign for Fiscal Equity, and the Campaign for Universal Childcare.\u00a0She has a deep commitment to prioritizing the voices of those that are directly impacted and a strong belief in the importance of leadership development. She is a mom of two plus fur babies Rosie and Luna, and spends her free time wandering in the woods, reading socially relevant nonfiction, and trying new things, such as her latest obsessions: roller skating and succulent gardening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
